Messages aren't deleted - they just become inaccessible. On Slack's free plan, messages remain viewable and searchable for 90 days. Anything older looks gone, but it's still stored in the system, and the full history comes back the moment you upgrade to a paid plan.
Slack's own pricing page is explicit about this: "Messages are saved and searchable for 90 days. Upgrade to access the previous…" - so the messages keep being stored; they're simply not displayed.

The real cost of the 90-day limit
What you lose isn't the messages. What you lose is the decision trail.
When you search six months later for why a decision was made, that discussion is unreachable. A new teammate can't read the project's history. You can't verify what was discussed with a client. You can't prove when a bug was first noticed.

Two things to try before paying

Moving important decisions out of channels and into a permanent document also solves most of the 90-day problem. Chat is an ephemeral medium by nature - it shouldn't be expected to double as an archive.
